Charlotte Scott, age 69, of Silver Spring, Maryland passed away at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (formerly the National Naval Medical Center) in Bethesda, Maryland Wednesday July 23, 2014 after a 33 month battle with lung cancer. She was an avid swimmer for over thirty years, attentive to good nutrition and work outs at the gym as well as a lifelong non-smoker. She loved to sew, bake, especially bread, work crossword puzzles and attend the winter POPS concerts at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Charlotte was born in Washington, D. C. April 10, 1945. She attended grade school in Washington, D. C. and then with her parents moved to Maryland while they continued to own and operate a grocery store in South East Washington, D. C. She graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville Maryland in 1963 and in 1967 from the University of California at Long Beach with a BA in Home Economics. While at Long Beach she met Don who was serving on active duty in the U. S. Navy. They married February 1, 1965 at Waukegan, Illinois where Don was serving a tour of duty ashore at the U. S. Naval Training Center, at Great Lakes, Illinois. Shortly thereafter Don was selected for a commissioned officer program and upon his commissioning at Newport, Rhode Island they returned to Long Beach in 1965 where Charlotte resumed her studies at the University.
She was a devoted U.S. Navy wife traveling with her husband to Great Lakes, Illinois, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Long Beach and San Diego, California, Newport, Rhode Island, Bremerton, Washington and Washington, D. C. She was an active volunteer with the Navy Relief Society that helps sailors and marines resolve financial and other personal difficulties. She belonged to a number of officer wives clubs during these tours. As Charlotte and Don concluded Naval Service at the last port of call in Washington, D. C. she worked at a nursery school and attended Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland to achieve accounting qualifications for Federal Government Service. From 1987 to 2011 she served as an accountant for the U. S. Mint at the headquarters in Washington, D. C. Charlotte was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM), a Systems and Supervisory Accountant (GS-510) and held a masters certificate in information technology project management. She received a number of federal civil service awards including an award from Vice President Al Gore for Y2K implementation of U. S. Mint enterprise software.
Charlotte acquired farm property in 1993 east of Chetek, Wisconsin. Residing here were her sister-in-law, Carol and her mother-in-law Mary. Mary passed away in 2003.
Charlotte is survived by her loving husband Don of forty nine years; sister Judy (Leroy) Devan of Fredericksburg, Virginia; nieces Rose (Frank) Vella of Alexandria, Virginia and May (Matt) Nyman of Corvallis, Oregon along with sisters-in-law Jane (John) Effertz of Weyerhaeuser,
Carol Scott of Ladysmith, Nancy Madejski of Orlando, Florida and Sandra (George) Tant of Stockbridge, Georgia; brothers-in-law Bob (Betty) Scott of Lebanon, Oregon, Ray Scott and Dennis (Sue) Madejski of Chetek, as well as many in-law nephews and nieces including John Effertz Jr. (DeeDee) of Eau Claire, Elizabeth Scott of Altoona, Joan (Jeff) Good of Spring Valley, Roger (Georgia) Scott of Hudson, Chastity (Brett) Ridout of Weyerhaeuser, and Mindy (Matt) Hamilton of Chetek.
Charlotte was predeceased by her parents Florence and Charles Kraus, daughter Michelle, and sister in law Yvonne (Bonnie Scott) Knowlton-Knaak. Charlotte was laid to rest, at Twin Lakes Cemetery, Chetek, alongside daughter Michelle who passed away in 1987 at age 18.
The funeral service will be Monday, July 28 th 11:00 a.m. at Burnham-Ours- Kolstad Family Funeral Home. Charlotte's family will greet guests from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service.
