Darrell Lyle Skoug

December 31, 1937 — June 23, 2023

Darrell L. Skoug, 85, was born on December 31, 1937, to Henry and Grace ( Hanson) Skoug of Chetek, WI.  He passed away on June 23rd, 2023, at Dove Healthcare, Bloomer, WI.

Darrell grew up on a dairy farm south of Chetek and attended Oak Grove School through 8th grade. He was a member of the Chetek High School Class of 1956 and graduated from UW River Falls in 1960 with a degree in secondary education. He taught mathematics and science in Winner, SD, and New Auburn, WI.

Darrell met Beverly Nielsen in college, and they were united in marriage on June 22nd,1963. The couple purchased the family farm, and Darrell built a new house for his family.  They welcomed three children: Wendy, Steve, and Eric.

Darrell was a man of faith, a loving husband/father/grandfather, and a devoted friend.  He was baptized and confirmed at Dovre Lutheran Church and was a member throughout his life. Darrell served on the church council and taught Sunday school.

Darrell was an excellent farmer raising good crops and was proud of his dairy herd average. He was an active part of his community and was always ready and willing to help his neighbors.  He also worked for North Central Crop Insurance as a crop adjuster. Upon retirement, Darrell volunteered for 20 years at the Barron County Historical Society Pioneer Museum.

During their 60-year marriage, Darrell and Beverly enjoyed square dancing, traveling, and card parties. Darrell also enjoyed snowmobiling, playing dart ball, making lefse, and working on tractors. He was proud of his kids and grandchildren and provided encouragement and support. Darrell also enjoyed visits with relatives, Sunday drives, and a good debate.

Darrell was a good athlete.  After chores, he gathered the kids to play softball ( or “work up” as he called it) until it was too dark to see the ball. Occasionally, he showed his teenage boys that he was still a better player than they would ever be.

Darrell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beverly Skoug; his sister, Diane (Skoug) Huth; his three children, Wendy (Hugh) Raddenbach, Steven ( Amy) Skoug, and Eric ( Kris) Skoug; his grandchildren, Sarah ( Andrew) Pedersen, Grace ( Abram) Pedersen, Daniel Raddenbach, Hannah ( Andy) Stoll, Claire Raddenbach, Jennie Skoug, and Nathan Skoug; his great-grandchildren, Matthias Pedersen and Zoe Pedersen and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.  Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, David Skoug.

A visitation will be held at Burnham-Ours Kolstad Funeral Home on Thursday, June 29th, 5-7 PM. The funeral service will be held at Dovre Lutheran Church on Friday, June 30th, at 12:00 PM. The family invites those attending to a meal and time of remembrance in the church fellowship hall following the service.
