Harlan Jerome Jerdet

September 24, 1921 — March 15, 2012

Harlan J. Jerdet, 90, of New Auburn, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Dallas Care and Rehabilitation Center from complications of heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Harlan was born in Austin, MN on September 24, 1921 to Henry and Helen (Kittelson) Jerdet.  When he was a small child his family moved to New Auburn to a farm his father had purchased and where he had lived his entire life.  He attended East Dovre grade school through the 8th grade and stayed on the farm helping his parents.  Harlan was confirmed at Chetek Lutheran Church in 1937 and was a lifelong member.

On June 10, 1943 he was united in marriage to Geraldine (Gerry) Gubrud at Bethel Lutheran Church in New Auburn.  Together they made their home on the Jerdet farm with his parents, raising their three children.  It was a busy farm life as Harlan had many extra jobs earning money through the depression years.  He also served his community by being on the East Dovre School Board, fire warden for Dovre and Chetek townships and served on the Grand Jury in Madison for a year.  He put in three terms as Supervisor on the Dovre Town Board.  He was a substitute mail carrier out of the New Auburn post office for about three years.

He started his road construction work by being a patrolman for the Town of Dovre which led to employment by three different contractors, the last and longest for Loren Wiesner of Cameron.

He never lost his interest in farming and continued helping his youngest son farm until his retirement at about the age of 80.  He enjoyed going to farm auctions, playing cards (Whist), visiting with friends and neighbors and helping others when needed in the neighborhood. Harlan was very proud of his Norwegian Heritage and expressed many times a wish to visit Norway.

Harlan leaves to celebrate his memory: two sons, Dean of Chetek, Arlyn of New Auburn; daughter, Kay (John) Berkley of Janesville; four grandchildren, Derek (Lorie) Berkley of Madison, Sheena (Wade) Hanson of Appleton, Krista Berkley of Janesville, and Kelli (Mike) Engen of Chetek and two great-grandchildren, Bennet Engen, Chetek and Ella Berkley of Madison.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine, parents, Henry and Helen Jerdet and a son in infancy Dale Harlan Jerdet.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Chetek Lutheran Church with Pastor Guy Redfield officiating.  The family will greet visitors at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.  The family wishes to invite their guests to join them for fellowship and lunch following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Harlan will be laid to rest alongside his wife Geraldine at the Lake View Cemetery in Chetek in the spring of 2012.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Wisconsin.

Harlan's family would especially like to thank the wonderful staff at Dallas Care & Rehab Center in Dallas for the kindness and good care extended to him.

The Burnham-Ours Funeral Home of Chetek has been entrusted with arrangements.
