Henrietta “Babe” McCarty was born May 22, 1914, on the Krans farm in Prairie Lake Township to Arthur and Selma (Krans) Roberts. She was born and christened Maxine Audrey, but her parents changed her name to Henrietta to honor her late uncle, Henry. She passed away peacefully, Sunday, September 2, 2012 at Knapp Haven Nursing Home in Chetek. She was 98 years old.
Babe leaves an incredible musical legacy in Chetek and the surrounding area, spending her life and talent playing the piano. While she took a few piano lessons as a girl, she was mostly self-taught. She always wanted to play for the silent movies like her sister, Millicent, but by the time she could do that, ‘talkies’ had replaced them.
Babe played for dances, school functions, churches and clubs and even accompanied her brother, Corlett, as he played trumpet. She played for multiple groups including The Combinations, in which her sister Zola Rae sang, Harbor Lights, and The Freedom Notes. With The Combinations she recorded an album and with Harbor Lights, she appeared regularly on a weekly Eau Claire TV show. She was also known for her decades-long musical partnership with Lenore Berg with whom she played for many functions, churches and nursing homes. Even into her early nineties, Babe used to talk of playing at Knapp Haven for the “old” folks.
Babe was a hard worker, having worked in banking most of her career, but she also knew how to have fun. Babe took three memorable road trips with her sister Zola Rae and niece Suzanne, where all anyone could remember was how much they reminisced, laughed and sang their way across country.
Babe leaves to celebrate her memory, brother, Corlett K. Roberts of Boise, ID; sister, Zola Rae (Kenneth) Cole of Bloomer, WI; nieces, Suzanne Arnevik, Marilyn Busick, Corliss Cole, and Elizabeth Roberts; nephews, Barry Cole, Richard Roberts, John Roberts, and Mike McCarty; other nieces and nephews, several great nieces, great nephews, other loving family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip H. McCarty; brother, Vernon A. Roberts; and sister, Millicent L. Dyrland.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, September 7, 2012 at The Chetek United Methodist Church, with Pastor David Anderson officiating. Babe’s family will be greeting visitors from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Friday at the church. Babe will be laid to rest on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Lake View Cemetery in Chetek.
