Mark L. Novak, 56, of Sparta, died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at his home. He was born on March 30, 1955 in Chetek, WI to Merlin “Mike” and Betty (Strand) Novak. He graduated from Cameron High School. He lettered in football and basketball. He then attended UW-River Falls and graduated from UW-Richland Center where he played basketball.

Mark worked as a salesman for Kotten Enterprises. He married Debra Kotten. She later passed away. He then owned and operated The Rite Spot tavern and restaurant in Sparta with Rosemary Ziegler-Erickson. He moved to Howard’s Grove, WI in the mid 90’s and worked as a salesman for Jay’s Food. He moved back to Sparta in 2004.     Mark was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed coaching and officiating youth games. He was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2001. The family would like to thank his caregivers, Barb, Miriah, Lee, and Deb.

Mark is survived by his children, Nick Jacobs of Tomah, Christopher Novak of Sparta, Gregory Novak of Sparta, and Marcus (Mackenzie) Novak of Sparta; a grandson, Mason Novak; two brothers, Brad (Jackie) Novak of Cumberland, WI and Douglas (Ann) Novak of Ladysmith, WI; five nieces; and many other relatives and friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Debra; foster parents, Lauren “Bud” and Corinne Gahler; and a brother, Rod Novak.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1p.m. at Burnham-Ours Funeral Home in Chetek, WI with Brad Novak officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Chetek.

The family will be greeting friends at the Burnham-Ours Funeral Home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of services.

The Burnham-Ours Funeral Home of Chetek has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
