David L. Skoug, 83, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2021. Born December 31, 1937, in Rice Lake, WI to Henry and Grace (Hanson) Skoug.
David was retired chair of and longtime professor in the math department at UNL. He enjoyed hiking in the Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone National Park, played handball for many years, and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and Celtics.
Muriel J. Skoug passed away peacefully on May 14, 2022, in Reston, Virginia, following a struggle with Alzheimer’s dementia. A long-time resident of Lincoln, Nebraska, Muriel moved to Virginia a year ago to be closer to family following the death of her husband of 59 years, David L. Skoug.
Muriel was born May 30, 1939, in Grantsburg, Wisconsin to Per Albert and Gladys (Richter) Peterson. She grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and graduated from River Falls State College with a major in mathematics. After teaching high school math for three years, Muriel earned a Master of Mathematics degree from the University of Minnesota. Muriel was a longtime professor in the Mathematics department at Nebraska Wesleyan University. While at NWU, she earned a doctorate from Idaho State University. Muriel enjoyed trips to national parks including Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone, and Glacier, and hiking in the mountains near Pocatello, Idaho. She took great joy in being a grandmother and was a frequent visitor at her grandchildren’s concerts, dance recitals, and sporting events.
They are survived by family members including daughters Ruth Skoug (Peter Ebey) and Kathryn (Russ) Pearlman; grandchildren David Pearlman and Karin and Sonja Ebey; siblings Diane Huth, twin brother Darrell (Beverly) Skoug, Florence Dahl, Ruby (John) Turner, Joyce (Bob) Polk, Frances (Rick) Parsons, Linda (Ken) Anderson, and Carole Petry; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for David and Muriel will be held at the Dovre Lutheran Church in New Auburn, WI on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 2:00 PM. There will be a visitation one hour prior at 1:00 PM. Muriel and David will be laid to rest in the Dovre Lutheran Cemetery after the service. The family invites attendees to lunch in the church following the burial.
