Myrtle M. Romanowski, 95 of Chetek passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Atrium Post Acute Care Center. She was born August 22, 1921 in Rice Lake, WI the daughter of Oscar and Cecilia (Nethkin) Ellefson.
Myrtle married Leon Romanowski June 19, 1941 at Strickland Church. Together they raised 8 children on a dairy farm 2 miles south of Chetek (which is now Sioux Creek Golf Course). Myrtle and Leon milked mostly Holsteins, maintained a modern operation with eight tractors, a corn picker and combine. Besides helping with chores, Myrtle sewed all the kids’ clothes, crocheted and did other types of handwork. She was a great cook and loved listening to polka music. Leon and Myrtle would go dancing three times a week after the kids were grown. They wintered in Texas and fascinated the locals there with their Wisconsin-style two-step dance.
Myrtle is survived by her husband of 75 years Leon, children; Marion Dye of Denver, North Carolina, Chuck (Jean) of Chetek, Lillian Solchenberger of LaCrosse, Susan (Lee) Hatfield of Denver, North Carolina, Carolyn (Jeff) Zwadlo of Lakeland, Florida, Cathy (Ken) Fossum of Rice Lake, Anita (Roger) Sykes of Rice Lake, 10 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, son Harold, an infant daughter, nephew Jason and brother Carl.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 4, 2016 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Family and friends may gather for a visitation one hour prior to Mass. Interment will take place at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery followed by a luncheon back at the Church. Please view and sign the online guestbook at www.burnhamours.com.
