Robert L. Mommsen, 84, Bloomer, formerly of Chetek, passed away Sunday, Dec. 11th, 2011. Robert (Bob) was born March 21, 1927, the oldest child of Frank & Dorothy (Hutchinson) Mommsen. After graduation from Chetek High School in 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy and served 7 years as a radio operator. After the Navy, he worked as a typesetter for the Chippewa Herald Telegram. He married Kathleen (Kay) Popple October 11, 1954. They had five children before divorcing in 1969. While married, Bob & Kay lived near Silver Bay, MN. and Bob worked for Reserve Mining Company as a crusher operator. He was an independent spirit and refused to live in a "Company Town". He raised his family, and logged pulp, on 160 acres of woods near Lax Lake. They moved from the lake to Palisade Resort & Bar in 1967. After their divorce, Bob relocated to Hayward, CA. where he worked for Lucent Technologies until retiring and returning to Chetek in 1990. In retirement He enjoyed gun collecting, yard sales, and socializing with his favorite waitresses.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Helen (Arthur) Hayes, and his brother, Fredrick Mommsen. Bob leaves to celebrate his memory: his brother, Theodore Mommsen, of Chetek; his children: Patricia (Toney) North, of New Auburn, Frank (Mary) Mommsen, of Sheridan, WY., Lawrence Mommsen, of Chetek, Marjorie Rihn, of Ladysmith, and Morgan (Desiree') Mommsen, of Chippewa Falls; his grandchildren: Chris North, Curtis (Megan) North, Amber (Jared) Beal, Robert Mommsen, Jessica Mommsen, Brianna (Shane) Davis, Jacob (Sarah) Mommsen, Kevin (Jen) Rihn, Tiffany Rihn, Bethany Rihn, Juan Mommsen, Teleatha Mommsen, Jackson Mommsen, Chanel Mommsen, Roman Mommsen, and his 15 Great-Grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 7:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Chetek. The family will greet visitors at the church from 5:00 PM until the time of service at 7:30 PM. Robert will be laid to rest at the Lakeview Cemetery in Chetek in the spring of 2012.
The Burnham-Ours Funeral Home of Chetek has been entrusted with arrangements.
